The microbiologic method to confirm or not the diagnosis of urinary tract infection is usually the culture and Gram-stain of the clean-catch midstream urine. Nevertheless, this is a costly and time-consuming method. We tried to evaluate the positive and negative predictive value of the nitrite and leucocyte-esterase reactive strips as an alternative method. When both the two parameters are negative it is fairly safe to exclude the urinary tract infection.Downloads
