Abstract

Since its discovery in 1817, Selenium has had great biological importance as a key element of cellular protection and in its absence of pathological symptoms. In this revised work, historical aspects of selenium are considered, its characteristics, properties and source as well as its nutritional value, metabolism, physiopathological and biochemical function in humans and finally its future therapeutical application in humans and animals considering some of the traditional ways of treatment.
