In praise of Koch. The discovery of the tuberculosis bacillus.

No dia 24 de Marco de 1882 - vai para cem anos - congregou-se na Sociedade de Fisiologia de Berlim uma plêiade de cientistas ilustres, em que sobressaía o grande Virchow, para ouvir um investigador de gesto sóbrio que lhes vinha contar as suas últimas experiências de laboratório. Chamava-se Roberto Koch e asseverava haver descoberto o agente da tuberculose. Bem depressa a notícia se espalhou aos quatro ventos já que o assunto era de monta e o próprio autor da comunicação, que intitulou Die etiologie der Tuberkulose, reconhecia que um sétimo de toda a Humanidade morria da referida doença, sem que até então se tivesse descortinado a sua causa. Não era porém um desconhecido este Koch.
