É já um lugar comum asseverar-se que as ciências médicas têm sofrido nas últimas décadas um progresso considerável. Clínicas e laboratórios, votados a um labor incessante de pesquisa da estrutura e funções do organismo humano e suas alterações, perseguem o fim último de conservar a saúde dos povos e evitar ou curar a doença. ….É certo que há ficheiros nas bibliotecas médicas, que há publicações consabidas, como a Index Medicus e a Excerpta Medica, destinadas a orientar a pesquisa bibliográfica e que há, ou deve haver, o olho esperto do bibliotecário pronto a intervir em caso de dúvida.
