Foi Murray, quem em 1891, utilizou pela primeira vez com êxito, injecções sub-cutâneas de extracto de glândulas tiroideias de carneiro, no tratamento do mixedema. Esta terapêutica só foi introduzida na clínica em 1948, por Means.
Os extractos tiroideus foram considerados a terapêutica de eleição, mesmo após a comercialização de L-tiroxina sintética, porque repunham a secreção normal de tiroxina (T4) e triiodotironina (T:~) pela tiroideia. Esta terapêutica ainda hoje é aconselhada por alguns autores.
