Esquematiza-se o diagnóstico das Neuroses de modo a acentuar a dimensão pragmática e clínica. Procura-se evitar conceptualizações teóricas, abstractas ou muito especializadas. Assim, utiliza-se o esquema no ensino pregraduado e posgraduado tal como é posto em prática no Departamento de Psiquiatria e Saúde Mental da Faculdade de Ciências Médicas de Lisboa. O propósito didático, tem em vista sensibilizar, estimular e habilitar o futuro médico na capacidade de delimitação de quadros clínicos em que o distúrbio neurótico pareça ser significativo.
