A Porfíria variegata (P.V.) e uma doença caracterizada por perturbações de metabolismo das Porfirinas e que é rara fora da Africa do Sul. Em Portugal, os estudos de M.L. Palma-Carlos e A.G. Palma-Carlos identificaram 12 casos de P.V. num total de 64 casos de Porfírias, o que dá uma frequência da ordem dos 25%, maior do que a esperada. O objectivo deste artigo é descrever um caso de P.V. precipitado pela Fenilbutazona e salientar os aspectos importantes do diagnóstico e tratamento precoces, bem como os de profilaxia e os estudos familiares, no prognostico da P.V..
